Saved By The Monster

Saved By The Monster

Mother decided to lecture me for half an hour before starting work for Caspar as she was not pleased he had offices at his home until I pointed out he also had a dozen other people working there as well. He had all sorts of staff running about taking care of events so it was not as if Caspar did the ground work for all of his events. His staff would arrange the set up, the deliveries and shout at various people until things were right then Caspar would turn up and do the last minute tweaking, greet the hostess and act as if he had personally supervised everything from start to finish. The old boods were so chuffed that he was slobbering over them that they never noticed he had only arrived ten minutes earlier. He would tell them dreadful lies like the flowers were perfect to compliment their dress or eyes or personality etc. He had a knack of making them feel important and cherished, something that they probably never got at home from their fat old husbands who were too buy making money to notice them.

I managed to sneak out while Mother was getting her second wind and drove to Caspar’s house glad to escape her ravings. Caspar lives in this huge old mansion that was sort of abandoned when this old lady went mad after living there all alone for forty years with a million cats. They found her wandering naked in the garden talking to her statues and put her in the old folk’s loony bin. Caspar got the place and set up all these rooms as different show cases so people can come in and Caspar takes them to a different room with a design in it and the old boods can decided the colour or theme to their stupid parties.

When I arrived he was holding bits of silk up to the light and complaining about dye lots to his assistant Claudia who was looking bored while she held onto the swatches. She asked in a rude voice what was I doing there and he said I was his new assistant which made her frown even worse and she snarled for which event to which he replied personal assistant. She gave Caspar an evil glare and walked off with the silk before he was finished which surprised me how impolite the people who worked for him were. Not rude in the Chantal shouting way, she was rude as being loud and shouting but she only did that when people messed up. Caspar’s assistants were really sarcastic about everything and acted like everyone else was stupid.

Caspar handed me an organizer and a phone which he told me was only to call him and have him to call me, no one else was to use it for any reason nor was I to ever get personal calls on it but from his tone of voice I knew he didn’t believe a word of it and his staff probably did what they liked as well. Then he gave me this book of scribbles he called his notes and told me to organise all the events into the organizer. I sat down at this little table in the corner of the large front room doing my best to ignore all the noise of people constantly running in and out with phones ringing endlessly and spent three hours trying to understand the instructions to the organizer.

By the time it was lunch I knew it was hopeless and one of the guys found me there took mercy on me and said I could leave to go eat if I wanted as Caspar was probably gone for the day. I breathed a sigh of relief, grabbed the organiser, notebook and went to Djini’s for a late lunch. Luckily the place was quiet so I could concentrate on the instructions and sat there trying to work out how to put data on the damn thing when a creepy voice oozed over my skin. Gervais was back from whatever hell dimension he had been visiting and there he was with his usual creepy smile giving me his dead fish stare. I was just about to grab everything and run when he took the organiser from me and sat at my table. I was panicking for if he did anything to it Caspar would kill me and find out I was a total fraud and had no idea how to use it.

When I accepted the job I just thought you punched stuff in like a phone sending messages and I never knew there were all these other weird functions, so when Caspar had asked in a bored tone if I knew how to deal with it I just shook my head yes. Gervais grinned at me like some malicious blight and said “You have no clue how to work this.” I was too transfixed by the fear of him doing something evil and was edging the notebook away from him when he picked it up and started typing things out on the pad.

I was about to lose a job on the first day and I know my track record is not the best with three jobs in a month but I was hoping to work more than one day at this one! Then he handed the organiser back to me and terrified I looked to see what he had done but of course he had to show me how he had set it up so here I was feeling weird sitting there with my creepy stalker while he saved my job for me.

Gervais had put everyone in the address book, then put all the events in order of dates, added the themes and then put all the pertinent people we were ordering stuff from. It got even stranger, Gervais got up and handed me the notebook saying to get it back that he had to get back to work. I grabbed it and watched him leave, without a single sly comment, no furtive touching, nothing and as soon as I was certain he was not lurking in some crevice I left and returned to the house as fast I could. I had just sat down when Caspar returned to find me at the desk holding the organiser, he grabbed it and looked it over impressed. He smiled and said I was already an asset and I didn’t know what to say so I said nothing, saved by Gervais, how awful is that?
