Reign of Gervais

Reign of Gervais

After work I met Jazz as her house and we went for a drive since we did not have any place safe for both of us to go I drove up to the lookout where I had my last kiss from Jojo. Bishop Vale looked so beautiful and peaceful from the distance that it was hard to imagine that we were both in hiding from the entire town. I asked Jazz what happened with Braith and she said she didn’t really know, one thing led to another and before she knew it her life with him had ended.

He phoned and asked to come over as he had something important to tell her and when he got there he told her how Nadia Voss was telling everyone that she was pregnant and he was the father. Jazz said she burst out laughing thinking it was just Nadia trying to get back at Tony for running around on her but when Braith did not deny it she felt as if he had stabbed her in the heart. She told Braith to leave and never come back and without any argument he walked out of her life. Jazz added that he was lucky Jojo had left with Royce because even his friendship with Royce would not have stopped him from doing something nasty to Braith.

When I heard this I was glad I had send Jojo away for if he had done something nasty to Braith it could have been the end of him! I wanted to tell her about Gervais and how he made me leave Jojo but she had enough going on in her own life so I couldn’t burden her. I told her I didn’t understand why Braith would do this and Jazz said she hadn’t let him stay around long enough to explain she just wanted him gone, she had enough experience of betrayal from watching her parents sham of a marriage.

She was so sad and I couldn’t offer her any real comfort as my own heart was too broken to be of use to anyone, I could only empathize that she and I were feeling the same type of pain. We went Northside for a coffee hoping to avoid everyone we knew and for a few minutes it looked as if we had achieved our goal until Zizi came wandering in. She saw us sitting there and I thought she would leave us alone since we did not wave her over but she didn’t, she came over and sat down. Zizi put her hand on Jazz’s arm said she was really sorry about everything and Jazz gave her a small little smile that barely touched her face. I thought about how the Vanderhaven family had not given either of these girls a very warm welcome and appeared oblivious to how they were the source of a lot of problems for others and were probably going to cause a lot more.

Jazz seemed to be okay with Zizi being there and we all sat drinking coffee trying hard not to say anything too devastating for Jazz for each of us had enough of a struggle carrying our own tragedies. Zizi said she was currently doing a recording for Osric to see if it will lead to anything and we both told her how impressed we were. Zizi then complimented Jazz on getting a small part on the local soap despite the best efforts of Lynx which was news to me and as I sat there watching my friends I realised that they had already outstripped me in achievements. I felt a bit like a fish out of water as I was not doing anything interesting, unless you call keeping track of Caspar's boods something interesting and I didn’t have any super talents to fall back on. It was a sad moment for me because I felt like my friends had moved into the world and I was stuck in Bishop Vale, chained to the whims of Gervais.

As usual the minute his ugly name crossed my thoughts he oozed into the café in his usually creepy way and before I could take a breath was at our table. He greeted Jazz and Zizi coolly as if he was not pleased they were with me and after being all friendly to me sauntered off to sit with some arty smarty types. Zizi turned to me the second he left and asked why Gervais had such a thing for me and I told her I honestly didn’t know and could only trace it back to when I had worked for Liselle and been rude to him and this was payback in his evil Dubois way he was going to torture me forever.

Jazz shook her head no, saying she saw the way he had looked at me and Gervais definitely had something for me that went beyond just amusing himself. Suddenly everything he had done to me became a hundred times worse for it was one thing to torment me for something to do, it was another to have Gervais trying to insert himself into my life. I told Jazz that was a very scary thought and maybe I should consider leaving town for a while but Zizi shook her head and told me to stand my ground. No one ever stands up the Dubois family and so far I had been the only one brave enough to take all three on at the same time, she added that people noticed that I did not back down for any of them. I told them both that the only person I had taken on was Gervais as Liselle did not live on this planet long enough to notice my existence and Ladonna did not shut up long enough to notice anyone else is speaking. They both laughed and for a minute I felt safer, as if I had two people I could tell things to, now if only I could tell Jazz how much I wanted to be with Jojo and end this terrible reign of Gervais.
