Start->Chapter 3->Episode 22 To Gervais
This evening Tiah and Coco came over and demanded we all go to Zebub to dance the night away and after spending yesterday watching Gervais try to charm Mother and Mother putting on her best fake social face I was in the mood to do something fun for a change. Being with them also meant less chance for him to find me along and waylay me as I was aware that since he did get what he wanted to get the day before he was not above a second attempt and I was not about to become the next ornament in the arm of a Dubois.
Zebub was overflowing with everyone who was someone with Osric sitting at his reserved table giving audience to those who wished a brief moment of reflected glory. Zizi looking shackled by the PR of her profession sat beside a glaring Shona who appeared to hate every artist Osric ever signed, not a good attitude for an assistant but since she was never fired I assumed she served some purpose in his world. I waved to Zizi while Shona gave me a sour look but before I go over to chat to her, Tiah took one look at Zizi being all celeb and dragged me into the bathroom to sprackle about her.
Tiah after not getting what she had wanted from me removed herself from the bathroom and sat with Coco while glaring at me from across the room as if I had betrayed her in some secret way but I was having far too much fun to give a fig about their miseries. They didn’t have half the problems I did and I wasn’t about to be their sobbing bucket anymore. Simon had found me exiting the bathroom and I don’t know what was more surprising, finding him at a club or the fact he was dragging me onto the dance floor and I finally had my first enjoyable moment this week. When the music stopped I went to go back over to the glaring twins but Simon dragged me to a table in the corner saying that they had made me miserable enough for one night. He took me by surprise and I sat back in my chair to query him as I asked how he knew they were making me miserable and he said he saw my face when I came in and after five minutes of their squawking I looked like someone had stolen my kitten and he certainly was right about how they made me feel and I was in no hurry to go back to them.
The minute the music started again he grabbed my hand and we danced the rest of the night away as this was the first bit of complete fun in my life since I had met Jojo Sedero. It would have been perfect had I been able to banish him from my thoughts but he was always in the back of my heart, a small silent ache that put a black border of grief around every joy. When the music finished again I looked over to discover that Tiah and Coco had left without me and I was slightly distressed as Tiah was my ride there and supposedly my lift home as well.
Simon caught me looking around for them and when I told him they had left without me he shrugged and said he would take me home, no problem. I took one last look around and giving up on the girls went out the door with Simon. He had parked at the far end of the parking lot where the lights were dim but that didn’t bother me as I was walking along with the equivalent of a human mountain. Simon was totally different from work, relaxed and even a bit chatty. He suggested we go to Sweet, an all night café and frequent haunt for clubbers after hours for a coffee and I said sure, why not for I was not ready for the night to end and it seemed neither was he.
Sweet is a great café because they have all these outdoor tables where you can enjoy the breaking of the dawn while enjoying some excellent coffee. We got a table on the sidewalk and as we waited for the waitress to come back a somewhat familiar car on the street edged by slowly. I didn’t think anything about it until the car slowed almost to a stop and I found myself looking at the malevolent glare of Gervais Dubois and if his fury had form it would have blown the café off the face of the universe with me and Simon in it. I wanted to be defiant or rude or bold or anything but Gervais had caught me off guard so instead the colour drained from my face as I froze into a silence causing a concerned Simon to take my hand while asking if I were ok. Gervais sent him a look of pure evil and I snatched my hand away before something bad could happen to him. Simon looked confused and then turned to see Gervais glaring at him, to my shock he nodded to him with a big grin and took my hand back into his causing Gervais to drive off the squeal of his tires expressing his rage. Simon winked at me and said not to worry that there was more than one way to skin a fox.
