Another One Bites the Dust

Another One Bites the Dust

I found my car in the driveway this morning with all the flats fixed and but no sign of Simon. Mother came into the breakfast room and said he had dropped it off, had a nice little chat and left while I was still asleep. She had offered to wake me but he was determined that I was not to be disturbed and I was grateful he was not here as he had asked me very few questions last night after picking me up from Zizi’s. I was worried what Zizi might have told him but since he had said nothing during the drive home I kept quiet. He kissed me at the door and had left with a grim look on his face that I knew would have born nothing good for Gervais if had known the truth.

I was in no hurry to get to work as Caspar and I were going to have a few words about the lock change on the door and Gervais just happening to turn up. However Mother deciding to be alert today noticed the bruises on my wrists and she narrowed her eyes while asking me where they came from and I told her not to worry, we were winding some fabric and I got caught up in it. The excuse was lame and she didn’t believe it for a minute and would not let me out the door before asking if everything was ok with Simon. I told her that Simon was perfect and a look of relief filled her face as I know she likes him a lot and this was what she needed to hear.

I drove very slowly to work checking my mirror often to ensure that Gervais was not lurking behind me for I was not going to be caught out again and as I drove up the drive I checked again to ensure Gervais was not already there and waiting. I went inside to find Tim talking to Claudia in the front reception, he opened his mouth but I gave him a look of such utter contempt that he fled to his office. I took my key and walked into Caspar’s office without knocking. I found him chatting to one of his women on the phone and he waved at me to leave but I stayed put with folded arms forcing him to hang up the phone early. I threw the key down on his desk and his face closed up for I knew the spineless moron would not admit to a thing so I did all the talking. I asked him why he would leave me without a key and he replied he changes the locks every time he fires someone. I called him a liar and asked why he would allow Gervais to nearly rape me and this caused him to look down at the floor, not in surprise but in misery.

He knew that Gervais had been waiting for me and I gave Caspar a look that was beyond hate telling him to count his blessings because if Gervais had been successful it would have been him that I came for and Caspar seeing I meant what I said finally looked worried. I went back to my desk, emptied it and started to walk out the door furious that another job was down the drain thanks to my evil nemesis.

As I opened the door to leave I came face to face with a startled Liselle Dubois whose eyes dropped to the obvious bruises on my wrist. A surge of anger came bubbling up inside of me for if anyone could have stopped Gervais it was her, why she would thought he could get away with this was beyond me. I left my arm on the door barring her entry inside and this time Liselle was not going to be allowed to ignore or dismiss me. I told her that if her brother ever so much as breathed in my direction I would make it my business to ensure he was no longer around. I added that if I could not do it myself I would find someone who would as there were plenty of people in the town only too happy to look the other way to get rid of him. Liselle’s face registered a proper emotion, the first I have ever seen on her as her cheeks went bright red and she looked at me with such grief I could not begin to understand what was going on in her life.

I took my arm away and pushed past her only to find Gervais lurking in her shadow, he had heard every word, my heart froze as I was unsure if he was going to kill me there and then but as usual I got it wrong yet again. His face was lit up with complete joy as he had heard my threats and the effect they had was to leave him smiling like a fool. I hated him and let him see it in my face but it did not even touch him. I walked past him and I heard him call out that my passion would always hold his heart. The stupid freak loved to be hated and I wanted a great harm to befall Gervais at that moment but instead I drove away intending to rid myself of the entire Dubois family once and for all.
