Day one: The Quest of Gervais

Day one: The Quest of Gervais

Today my heart sank as I saw life turning away from me once again as in an uncontrolled spin the wheel of fate left me living a destiny of any choosing but my own. I spent most of the day at work trying to locate Caspar and when he was nowhere to be found left in disgust for Djini’s. I thought if I was going to face Gervais I might just have to do it alone and without help from anyone else. To my surprise Gervais did not magically appear the minute I got there and instead I found myself cornered by a frantic Tiah. She had escaped her house which was currently a war zone with Braith, Royce and Taryn with all appealing to Jago to sort out the engagement party.

At the last moment Braith had sprung on Taryn that he wanted Zizi to attend since she was also his sister so Taryn and Tiah sprackled til the chandeliers nearly fell down and Jago seemed pleased with the idea. Taryn started making ultimatums saying she would never invite that creature and her mother into her home etc. Since appealing to her husband had no affect Taryn decided she would cancel the party which would be a huge social insult to Jazz and Tiah who was no fan of either girl was supporting her mother like mad on the idea. Braith got all cranky and told his mother to cancel it as he didn’t care if she had a stupid party and this is when Royce, the silent shadow of the family decided to throw a spanner in the works by informing his mother that she did not have to cancel anything since they could announce his engagement to Coco at the party.

This managed to stun the usually vocal family into silence for a few minutes for a few weeks ago Royce was busy trying to fly a surfboard off a mountain or some such thing and now he wanted to announce his engagement. His mother glared at him for a minute, then snapped at him to stop being ridiculous before continuing to harangue Jago about Braith wanting Zizi to attend the party. Tiah said Royce did something he had never done before, he raised his voice to his mother. Royce, the laid back surfer boy who just coasted through life must have finally got fed up with Taryn trying to plan every moment of his existence and he told Taryn very firmly that if she did not want to host an engagement party for Braith and Jazz she could host one for him and Coco but either way there was going to be party.

Tiah said Jago put down his papers and stared at Royce as if he was a stranger and Taryn seeing her dreams of becoming attached to the Dubois fading away quickly capitulated and said she would invite Zizi to the party. Tiah said Taryn was unbearable the rest of the day causing her to escape to Djini’s as soon as possible. She also swore me to secrecy saying she didn’t want Coco to get any ideas as she believed Royce was just trying to annoy her mother. I knew Tiah was not the least bit concerned with his wellbeing, she just didn’t want to be the next one that Taryn had married off because with Elyce out of the way Gervais was the only Dubois left in the family! The one good thing from all of this is that I knew now that Royce was capable of handling Elyce and Taryn so I could tell Gervais to find someone else to torture and finally I could tell Jojo that I did want to be with him, that is if he decides to stick around this time.

I left Tiah in her misery and went home in a good mood for the first time in weeks that lasts until I put one foot in the door and Mother greeted me breathless and pale as if she had just heard the world was ending in ten minutes. I asked her what was wrong fearing for her health but as usual she had all her eggs totally in the wrong basket. She sat down and said in a faint voice that the wedding was over, for Jazz and Braith were no more. Chantal was celebrating and Jazz was heartbroken and I wondered where Jojo and Tony were in all this drama—probably hiding in the cellar someplace.

I went upstairs leaving Mother to nurse the gin she never manages to finish as she and Chantal would probably burn the wires all night. This time it was my turn to phone Jazz for someone had to get the true story behind this shock announcement and I called her up but her phone was turned off, then I tried her house phone but it was busy so I reluctantly phoned the last person I wanted to speak to at that moment, I called Jojo and asked him to get his sister. Jazz came on the phone and was remarkably together for someone who had just broken up with her finance. I asked her why she had decided to ruin her life when it was obvious that she and Braith were meant to be together which made her go silent for a second before she replied it was private. I was not about to take this as answer not the way she and Jojo shared all my secrets so I told her that since she appeared to know everything that went on between Jojo and me she might as well tell me because if she doesn’t Jojo will.

Jazz was quiet for another minute then said it was because of Zizi which shocked me to hear her say such a thing as Jazz was not a snob. I asked her why she would treat someone we grew up with like this and she said that I had the wrong idea, it was not because she was Braith’s sister but because he was using her to get back at his mother for hating their wedding and inviting her for all the wrong reasons, and without asking her if it was ok. Braith had tried to explain it to her but not being the most articulate of people he had managed to mess it up into a demand. I told Jazz that I thought Braith was not trying to use Zizi to annoy Taryn but trying to bring her into the family when Taryn was being a bitch about it and Jago too pathetic to tell her to shut up. At first she didn’t believe me until I explained that I was up there all the time and the entire Zizi thing is driving Taryn insane as she can’t even say her name and calls her “that creature”. Jazz softened a bit and I could tell she was starting to see the other side of everything. I told her that Braith was a good guy and his heart was in the right place even if he had no brains. She got cranky at this and started defending him so I knew everything would be ok. I said goodbye and lay down on my bed wondering why didn’t I know anyone who was normal? I live in a soap opera.
