Start->Chapter 5->Episode 19 To Gervais
After Zizi and I had come to our mutually understood but unspoken agreement I considered who it was that we could approach to complete our endeavour. I knew that we could not consider Jazz until Gervais actually stopped her wedding so I decided to leave her to his plans as he needed to burn her before she would be amenable to our plans. Zizi had left me pondering the gravity of our choice but we knew that this town would never be free of his evil influence if we did not do something to rescue it. He was like Nero, full of the vices of his empire and none of the strengths that built it. I was not going to allow his destructive self indulgence destroy my life or the lives of anyone else anymore. Gervais had come to the end of his reign and it was going to be a family member that ended it. I did not consider going to Liselle or Ladonna as both were too self involved to reach out beyond the compound they lived in and despite their skirmishes with Gervais they were content to allow his reign to remain intact.
I had sat down to breakfast while an unusually quiet Maritka pottered about the kitchen and from her bleak glances I garnered that she had discerned what Zizi and I had discussed. I doubt that this house had ever held a single conversation without Maritka being privy to it in some way and I gave her a steady look to show her I was not about to back down in any form. She folded her arms and gazed back at me in same manner and I knew then whatever happened she was going to have my back. I went out to the terrace to contemplate how to approach those who had been touched by Gervais when my thoughts were interrupted by a banging on my front door. Wondering who would be making such a racket I opened the door a fraction to see a tear stained Coco standing disheveled on my front porch, I let her in and prepared myself for the copious amount of tears that would fall in her wake. I took her out into the terrace hoping the garden would calm her down but Coco just sat there shaking and muttering while making no sense. To my surprise she was far removed from the sobbing waif I had expected to find and was instead in the grip of some fury. I asked her what was going on and got a glare that only an infuriated wife can give.
Coco, after being sent home by Gervais had been keeping close tabs on her husband and all went well until her fear about Lynx had come true. Bored with keeping Jojo busy Lynx had decided to amuse herself by seducing the married man for nothing Lynx loved more on her men than a big “off limits” sign above their head and Coco had placed one verbally over Royce by telling Lynx to keep her scheming hands to herself. Lynx who has a unique sense of hearing, translated that into “please seduce my husband any time you like”. Royce to give him credit did a wonderful balancing act from the time Coco left until he had returned back to Bishop Vale as he and Jojo had only just settled in ready to do some local colour shots when Gervais decided to uproot them once again to film out of town.
An agitated Coco tried to intervene and complained that Royce had only been home for a few days and while an unsuccessful Royce tried to mollify her, he wound up leaving with her sobbing recriminations in his ears. Lynx with her uncanny radar picked up the vibes of unhappy husband and set about soothing him in her best ‘there, there, come hither’ voice. But Coco was not going down without a fight, she knew that Jojo could have done this shoot alone with Lynx for it was pure location and Royce only went because Lynx herself requested it. She decided in her brainless way to just turn up at his hotel in the middle of the night so he would have no choice but to put up with her until she left.
So Coco turned up at the hotel in the middle of the night, convinced someone to let her into Royce’s room only to discover her husband was not in his bed at two am. She then dragged a half asleep Jojo out of his bed to realize he had been alone that night so all that remained was to find which room belonged to Lynx. Jojo did his best to ward off Coco but an angry wife was going to have her way regardless of the intent of a best mate. Coco found the room and made a scene banging on the door until a slightly askew Lynx opened the door to reveal her triumph, a shamed Royce sitting upright in her bed clutching the sheet like a lifeline in world suddenly set aflame.
Coco said at that moment she could see her entire world crumbling about her. She could see Lynx and Royce, the room, everything was in a clear sharp focus that left her very calm and she turned around without a word driving all the way back to Bishop Vale before shedding a single tear. Then the flood hit her and she sobbed violently, realizing that her marriage was now over. She could not go home as her parents would not understand her predicament for they would value the relationship to the Vanderhavens above her happiness, she could not count on anything from the Vanderhavens, and there was no point appealing to Liselle as the damage had been done. An exhausted Coco dried her tears and came to the conclusion that what she wanted was revenge, bloody and hot and not surprisingly against Lynx. Coco had decided the person responsible for the demise of her marriage was Gervais himself for making her go home as he knew it was only a matter of time before Lynx got bored with Jojo and moved onto Royce and Royce she added scathingly was not bright enough to work out what Lynx was up to until after it had happened. He wasn’t even a proper challenge for her.
Coco might have been vague about life, but one thing she was not vague about in the slightest and that was her husband’s failings for she knew all about his faults and had married him anyway. I looked at Coco in a whole new light but said nothing to encourage her hatred of Gervais, after her glaring silence during the whole Jojo drama I still did not trust her and refrained from anything but a few supportive comments. A few hours later Coco calmed down and accepted some tea from Maritka who gave me a telling glance before she left and I knew that Maritka did not want me to recruit Coco but here she was, just ready to be pushed into the right direction. Coco continued obsessing about ways to get back at Gervais until she had exhausted her options and then she tried starting on Lynx, but like the rest of us she knew Lynx was just the tool, not the reason for our problems. The conversation petered out until we were both left staring at the roses in the garden for despite our broken hearts it was a beautiful day and birdsong filled the air.
Coco came out of her reverie giving me a frank look that belied her usual vague state and she said “We need to get rid of Gervais before he destroys us all.” I could feel the seconds stretch between us as if time was standing still and I had to ask myself, was I really about to suggest this action to my childhood friend? A few months ago we were nothing more than carefree school girls only concerned with fashion and gossip and here we are considering a path that would scare any sane person. I could feel time stretching between us, like an elastic band until it snapped me back into reality. I looked at her and said “Funny thing, Zizi just said that to me yesterday, “ and Coco was in.
